Nokamura Hochu ( Japanese )
- Early 19th century
This painting by Hochu joins a work by his associate Sakai Hoitsu (1972.7.FA) as stellar examples of the Rimpa school in late 18th- and early 19th century Japan. Rimpa is a virtually abstract style of painting going back to 17th century masters like Korin. Hochu's decorative economy of means is very subtle, with the hydrangea flower quite summarily indicated.
