Winds Between the Worlds
Carlotta M. Corpron ( American, 1901 - 1988 )
- negative c. 1945, print 1977
This image and another by Carlotta M. Corpron [1978.18] embody the artist's experimental photographic studies, in which she used textured glass and paper to create abstract compositions that represent her idea that "light follow form." Influenced by Surrealist practices, especially the photographs of Man Ray, Corpron was seminal in pushing the boundaries of the medium. Having received her education from Columbia University in New York, Corpron spent a large part of her career as an educator, arriving in Denton, Texas in 1935 to teach at Texas Woman's University. Her strong relationships with contemporary artists brought László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes to Texas and positioned Corpron as an important influence for future generations of women artists.
