General Description

This mezzotint of General Nathaniel Greene is based on an oil painting by Charles Wilson Peale, executed just weeks after Greene drove the British from Charleston. Peale's work was engraved by Valentine Green, based on an intermediary drawing by the British draftsman Thomas Stothard. Although some of the details in the mezzotint are original to Peale's painting of General Greene, Stothard took the liberty of adding a horse and attendant taken from Peale's 1779 portrait of George Washington titled _Washington at Princeton. _
