General Description

Ex-votos are a type of votive art – objects that are offered in fulfillment of a vow or to express gratitude to a higher power. When a person is sick or in danger, they might pray to a particular saint, or to the Virgin Mary or Christ, to heal and safeguard them from danger. If those prayers are answered, they commission small commemorative paintings like these, which pair a visual illustration of the event with a written account. Ex-votos were often hung in churches near altars dedicated to the holy figure featured in their creation, offering a visual testament to the figure’s power.

Translation: In the month of July in the year 1939 it happened to Pablo Vasquez that on the 6 of July at 4 in the morning of the same month of July I was taken by government men with the intent that I should give them information concerning some bandit thieves and out of malice that I had protested to them that I knew nothing about them [the thieves] they tried to shoot me with the greatest effort and seeing myself in such a great affliction without knowing anything and without owing anything I committed myself with faith the Blessed Virgin of San Juan that she might deliver me from such great danger and without the help necessary for my salvation and because she conceded me such powerful miracle I dedicate the accompanying retablo to her in her temple as a perpetual remembrance for the faithful to which I swear Pablo Vazquez Puerto de Vitoria September of 1940.
