The Misses Plowden
Sir William Beechey ( British, 1753 - 1839 )
Sir William Beechey was a fashionable portrait painter of English society whose large clientele included the family of King George III. His style was largely inspired by the portraits of fashionable British aristocrats produced during the late 18th century by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and George Romney. In this captivating double portrait, Beechey depicts the Plowden sisters playing a piano and guitar. Although not much is known about the pair, their refined gowns and jewels, elegant coiffures, and musical accomplishments reveal their status as educated and well-to-do young women.
