General Description
This spare but intense portrait of the novelist Joseph Conrad listening to the music of Brahms was made in May 1923, shortly after Conrad and Bone arrived in the United States. They had traveled together from the United Kingdom aboard the SS Tuscania, then under the command of Bone's brother. Several years earlier, the artist had represented the ocean liner docked in the port of Glasgow (in The Tuscania at Glasgow, at right).
