Death Seizing a Mother
Käthe Kollwitz ( German, 1867 - 1945 )
"I have the right as an artist to extract the emotional content from everything, to let things take their effect on me and to give them external form." —Kathe Schmidt Kollwitz The woman's horrified expression as she struggles against the grasping arms of death conveys her terror at being wrenched from her young child. This print is one of eight in Kathe Kollwitz's last series of lithographs, entitled Death. The artist's sister once accused her of having a lifelong "dialogue with Death."
