Portrait of a Man in a Green Suit
- MAKER:
Artist
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni ( Italian, 1708 - 1787 )
- DATE:
- 1760s
General Description
Although we do not know the identity of the man shown in this portrait, he was likely one of the many young men who traveled to Rome as part of a European Grand Tour, considered the final step in a gentleman's education in the 18th and 19th centuries. These aristocratic tourists often included a visit to Pompeo Batoni's studio as part of their itinerary, and a portrait by this famous Roman artist was a valued souvenir. The green coat and waistcoat worn by this sitter must have been provided to him by Batoni, as they appear in numerous other portraits by the artist.
