General Description

Barely differentiated from the architecture of his studio and less distinct than the objects arrayed on the table before him, the artist Philip Guston appears as a disembodied head literally immersed in the act of making art. This satiric self-portrait equates the artist with the elements of his artistic process and his life: paintbrushes, food, and the passage of time as represented by a misaligned watch. The painting is as much a portrait of those various things as it is a portrait of Guston, and it suggests their power over his sense of self.
