Kusatsu: Famous Resting Place
Utagawa Hiroshige ( Japanese, 1797 - 1858 )
This print is particularly descriptive of the men who made their livings carting kago (palanquin) up and down the Tōkaidō. Known as kumosuke (cloud men), they were the rough, tough, hard-living porters of the road.
