General Description
A dramatic depiction of the turbulence of Reconstruction, this engraving is an excellent example of John Sartain’s ability to manipulate the range of tones between black and white. One of the most prominent engravers of his day, Sartain helped popularize other artists’ works through his reproductions in various art annuals—some of which he founded.
