General Description
These blocks of color are in many ways the epitome of abstraction, a key focus of Gerhard Richter’s later work; yet, these particular colors, when placed in conjunction, echo the German flag. Reducing this symbol of national unity to its constituent parts allowed Richter to explore the ways in which images are assigned meaning and endowed with the power to shape identity and belonging.
