Untitled, CLG # 005 (Puppeteer)
Robert Jessup ( American, 1952 )
Flanked by a mask and holding a puppet atop his shoulders as gently as if it were a child, Robert Jessup's puppeteer seems melancholy and pensive, much like a stage character himself. Influenced by history, allegory, daily life, and imagination alike, Jessup's theatrical compositions often include strange, mysterious characters in the form of people, toys, and animals. Like the rest of his paintings and works on paper, this scene is suggestive of a narrative but its meaning is ambiguous.
