Clover with Eyes
Roberto Juarez ( American, 1952 )
In his paintings, prints, and drawings, Roberto Juarez explores the notion of transparency by carefully manipulating color and line: "I love both things," the artist writes, "when they fit together and when they don't." In "Clover with Eyes," the patches of bright colors seem to lie on different planes from one another, giving depth to the image and interacting with the bold, dark outlines of the surreal plant forms. The urban landscape of New York is a continual source of inspiration for Juarez's style and subject matter, including the coded inscriptions on graffiti-covered walls. This drawing has a similar enigmatic and undecipherable quality.
