Woman with an Umbrella
Pierre Bonnard ( French, 1867 - 1947 )
Pierre Bonnard delighted in recording the chic silhouette of the parisienne, a type of stylish urban woman that came to symbolize Paris and modernity in the later 19th century. Lifting her skirt as she steps forward, perhaps onto a sidewalk, the parisienne casts a coquettish glance in our direction.

- The model for this work was likely Marthe de Méligney (Maria Boursin), whom he met in late 1893, married nearly 30 years later, and depicted in hundreds of his paintings and prints.
