General Description

After an inspirational trip to Italy in the early 1880s where he admired Classical models, Pierre-Auguste Renoir renewed his interest in the nude, which he had abandoned in the previous decade. The nude would subsequently dominate his artistic production during the last twenty years of his life. The model in this work, most likely Renoir’s soon-to-be wife, Aline Charigot, braids her hair in front of a loosely painted background. Although it evokes a landscape, it was undoubtedly painted in his studio.
