General Description

Strolling across the Pont Royal against the backdrop of the Louvre Museum, a young couple holds onto their fine garments as strong winds catch them by surprise. With a delicate and highly polished painting style, Garnier often documented the changes in Parisian fashion during and after the French Revolution. Here, the contrast between the couple’s expensive silk attire and the young beggar’s ripped and worn clothing creates a poignant illustration of the tumultuous social climate.
