Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Who is represented in this painting?

  • How would you describe the relationship between the figures?

  • Do you think that these figures are related? Why? Edmund Charles Tarbell’s family were frequent subjects for his paintings. Here, he depicts his wife, Emeline, with their oldest child, fifteen-year-old Josephine.

  • What do you think is their social status? Consider how they are dressed and how they are posed. Tarbell met his wife, Emeline, after returning from studies in Paris and a Grand Tour of Italy. Emeline came from a prominent Massachusetts family.

  • If you were going to paint a picture of your family, how would you choose to depict them?
