  • Naum Gabo was influenced by the Cubists' fragmentation of human anatomy. How is that fragmentation represented in this sculpture?
  • During World War I, perhaps due to scarcity of materials, Gabo created the inital maquette in cardboard and only later made a version in galvanized iron. He created this version using celluloid, which had not been used to create sculptures prior to this time. Celluloid is plastic that is easily molded and shaped and was first widely used as an ivory replacement. Why would it be important to find a replacement for ivory?
