Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • In this painting, some colors are almost hiding from us. We have to look really closely to see them. What do you notice?

  • If we could touch this painting, how do you think it would feel? Would it be smooth or bumpy?

  • Show the complete color wheel and review color theory—primary and secondary colors, warm colors, cool colors.

  • What type of colors do you see in this painting?

  • How do you think the paint was applied to the canvas? The artist, Jack Whitten, did not use a paintbrush, but instead used troughs of paint that he dragged pointed objects through, like rakes and combs. If you were to use household objects to paint with other than a paintbrush, what objects would you choose?
