Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Paul Serusier's painting is very detailed. Some of the people are dressed alike. Some are interacting. Separate the painting into four groups of people and point out their locations. Based on your observations, suggest who the different groups of people might be or what they might be doing.

  • Why do you think Serusier would show these groups all together in one scene?

  • Choose one character and explain what you see and what you are doing from their perspective.

  • How does the artist separate the foreground and background in this work?

  • What is the main focal point of this painting or are there many?

  • If you were to give this painting a new title, what would it be and why?
