Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Look closely at the vitrine. Can you find an animal? A plant? A person?

  • What materials do you see?

  • What do you think this object was used for?

  • Conservators are very important within a museum because they help to protect and preserve the artwork from external elements. What kinds of things could cause damage to an artwork like the Vitrine?

  • Has anyone ever polished silver by hand? When did you polish the silver? Before a large family gathering?

  • This entire vitrine had to be disassembled and polished by hand using Q-tips to get into every nook and cranny. What would it feel like to take this entire 200 lb vitrine apart and polish every piece by hand?

  • This vitrine was the center showpiece of the Vienna Art Show in 1908. This was purchased after the art show by Karl Wittgenstein, where it was shown in his family home until his death. Would you want to have this vitrine in your home? If you had a vitrine, what type of objects would you display?
