Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Do you see any animals in this painting? Which ones?

  • Does this work take place on the land or in the sea? How would a bull be swimming in the sea? This is a story from Greek mythology, which means it does not have to be realistic. In this story, the bull swims across the sea to bring Europa to a distant land.

  • The bull, which is really the god Zeus in disguise, is kidnapping Europa, the woman on the bull’s back. Does she seem like she is in distress? Why would the artist choose to paint her this way?

  • The colors in this painting are light and cheerful. Does this match the subject matter?

  • How does the artist move your eyes around the canvas? How does he direct your eyes around the entire piece?
