Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Mood is a term to describe the feeling of a work of art. Some mood words are: quiet, peaceful, busy, angry, cheerful. The colors and lines in a painting can help us guess the mood. What is the mood of this painting? How do you think the main character is feeling?

  • What do you think happened right before and after this scene?

  • What types of lines do you see in this painting? Act out the way some of the lines look.

  • Choose an object or character in the painting and take its perspective. What do you see? How do you feel?

  • What time of day do you think it is? What is the weather like in this work?

  • For this painting, Benton used the New Testament story of the Prodigal Son as inspiration for this painting. What is the plot of this biblical parable? How is Benton's depiction similar or different?
