Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • What do you think is happening in this scene? How many figures can you count? Can you identify any of the figures?

  • Do you think this painting was meant to be seen in a church or a home?

  • This painting would have been hung high in a church or chapel, perhaps over an altar. Where would we, the viewers, be in relation to the people in the painting? How does this identification with the crowd affect your reaction to the scene?

  • In what ways has the artist made us realize that Christ is suffering? What does his body language tell us? Why has the artist shown him this way?

  • The Latin phrase "ecce homo" means "Behold the Man." How does the artist direct the viewer's gaze to the main male figure in the painting?

  • By looking at the facial expressions and the body language of the other people crowded around Christ, what kind of reaction do you think they are having toward the event?
