Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • Emile Bernard, as well as many other Post-Impressionist painters, moved away from the Impressionist mode of painting with its small strokes of color and instead painted with large, flat areas of pure, unmixed color. What colors do you see that Bernard used? Are these colors naturalistic?

  • If you could step inside this scene, how would the weather feel? What things might you smell? What things might you hear?

  • Notice that this work is constructed of dry, chalky oil paint on cardboard. What do you think this says about the artist and his intentions for this work?

  • Can you think of any groups of people in the United States today or in the past who could be compared to the people of Brittany, having a unique religion and way of life, and dressing in special clothing?
