Art Discussion

  • What do you do to keep yourself warm when you are outside?
  • Brainstorm a list of all the different types of clothing we can put on to keep ourselves warm.
  • Have the children look at the Morisot painting. What warm things is this woman wearing?
  • What do you think a muff is for?
  • Look closely at the coat the lady is wearing. What colors do you see? If you look closely, you realize that there are many different paint colors on the coat even though from a distance, it reads as a brown coat.
  • If you were giving this painting a title, what would you call it?
  • The portrait by Morisot is called Winter. It was popular at the time to draw a fashionable lady for each of the seasons. If we had a “Spring” or “Summer” portrait, what do you think the ladies would be wearing?
  • Morisot was part of the Impressionist movement in Paris and often used family and friends as her models. However, the model for this portrait is unknown.
