Encouraging Dialogue
For Students K-12
-
Look carefully at the figures. How do the male and female figures differ? Do they stand in a natural way? Try taking the pose yourself and describe how you feel.
-
Describe the structure of the stool as a whole. Why do you think that the artist carved four legs and a shaft in the center? The stool as a whole describes the structure of the world. The base is the earth; the seat is the sky; and the shaft is the central tree or supporting axis of the world. The four outside legs represent the cardinal directions.
-
How do you think it would feel to sit on this stool?
-
Do you have a special chair or piece of furniture at home? What makes it special?
