For Students K-12

  • What type of pattern do you see on this tunic? The decorative strips of double-bodied birds reflects Chancay style.

  • What are the main colors of the tunic?

  • Remember that up in the mountains, tunics were usually longer to cover more of one’s body in the cooler air. Where it’s warmer, down by the coast, tunics were often shorter. Do you think this tunic was one worn in the mountains or near the ocean? How do you think it would feel to wear this garment?

  • The waist-high length, long sleeves, and waist band are typical of the Andean coast. Fringe at waist and sleeve is typical of coastal. Striped patterning is typical of the highlands. What does it mean that this garment has parts from many different cultures?
