Encouraging Dialogue

For Students K-12

  • What do you notice about this work of art?

  • Are the letters all the same or different?

  • How do you think the artist made this?

  • Pierson is a photographer and artist from Massachusetts and is known for his photographs of celebrities and sculptures made from parts of salvaged signs.

  • In the early ‘90s, Pierson was walking down Houston Street in New York when he came across an outdoor vendor’s stall selling random junk, including letters from old signs. His first piece spelled “STAY” and with each letter costing $10, his cost of $40 seemed affordable for a new style. If you were to make a work of art that included one word, what would that word be?

  • Have you ever found ‘trash’ or ‘junk’ and turned it into treasure?

  • Let’s imagine the different stores these signs could have come from. The shape, style, and color of the letter can help us imagine a store for this sign to advertise.

  • Select one letter from Anytown, USA and imagine what store this sign was on. What do we see when we walk inside? What sounds do we hear? What smells would we smell?
